DIY Pom Pom Embellished Blanket

The DIY train rolls on in my quest to finish baby boy’s nursery!  If you missed my first post in this series you can see it here – my DIY starry ceiling treatment for the room which is essentially the centerpiece of the space.
So far, I’ve got the basics in place – the nursery “triangle” as I like to call it (crib, changing table, rocker) and am moving on to the next layer of stuff – textiles!  That includes everything from curtains and rugs to blankets, bedding, etc.
Today I’m sharing a sweet little baby blanket that I embellished with some yarn pom poms.  Everything is cuter with pom poms on it.  It’s just a fact of life.  It helps if you’re starting with a cute blanket too but even a completely plain one will work.
Pom pom maker:  I like these Clover ones.
Yarn:  I used Martha Stewart’s roving wool yarn in blue agave.
Blanket: Mine is from Zhush.com

Your first step is to make your pom poms obviously.  I didn’t find the Clover pom pom maker to be incredibly intuitive right out of the box but they are super easy to use once you get the hang of it.  I found this video to be a great starting point if this is your first time making yarn pom poms.

My one tip is to really load up on the yarn.  It’s the best way to get full, evenly round pom poms.  Wrap, wrap and then wrap some more!  And don’t be afraid to give your pom poms a light trim after you pop them out of the pom pom maker.  They might have a rogue longer thread or two sticking out.  Just a little off the top can keep them nice and compact and round.

Once you have your pom poms made, string up a large needle and tie several knots onto some doubled up thread.

String a pom pom onto your needle by pushing the needle straight through the center of your pom pom.  If you’ve tied your knots large enough, it will hold in the dense center of your pom pom.

With your pom pom secured, stitch onto the corner of your blanket.  Do a few more (6 or so) stitches back and forth through the pom pom and into the blanket corner.

Give it a tug and test how secure it is.  It’s amazing how well these little balls hold the thread!  After several passes it should feel pretty tightly on there.  When your satisfied, trim your thread.  Do the other 3 corners and you’re done!

That’s it!  Monumental it is not but I love little (easy!) projects like this that can add another layer of interest and texture to a room. And I love the added pop of color these sweet pom poms bring to an otherwise neutral baby blanket.

Fair warning, pom pom making is downright addictive.  I made these four and immediately started looking for other places I could use pom poms.  You really have to exercise some self control!

Comments

  1. Cute! You have to share where you got the blanket from!

  2. I am a MAJOR fan of homemade pompoms and tassels lately, and I couldn’t possibly love these fuzzy pompoms any more. What a cute touch! With all of these DIYs you’ve been sharing lately, you are definitely a mommy-on-a-mission!

  3. I am planning on a pile of pompoms in a vase and lanterns at Christmas time. And possibly some on a string.

  4. The Pompoms are ‘not my jam’, but I really, really love the ceiling!
